Work Practice
Work Practice
March 5

We had another successful day of Work Practice at Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple.  The sun was out, the gardeners were able to put some plants in the ground and the rest of us finished taking down the stage and wall between the kitchen and furnace room! Lots of de-nailing and saving old lumber and flooring, one magenta room is primed, and the linoleum is coming up with the sound determination of a number of dedicated people.
Thanks for all the hard work to Chuck, Fran, Greg, Fuho, Doug, Senryu, Joseph, Samuel, Gensho, Cibyl, Jeremy, Lowell, Steven, Brandon, Nan, Nancy B, Ron, Elise, Zac, Evan, Dawn and of course Hogen.  We appreciate Hogen coming from the monastery and bringing treats....and keep us on task.  (Sorry if I missed anyone, please let me know)

Pagoda Unveiling
Pagoda Unveiling
February 27

On February 27th the pagoda at Great Vow was unveiled. The ceremony took place during the

Sunday Program, and came at the end of the Pari-Nirvana sesshin. During the ceremony

participants circumnabulated the pagoda, chanting and ringing bells, while the pagoda was unveiled. Once the fabric was removed everyone placed offerings of flowers on the pagoda.

The work party on Feb. 26 showed the hardiness of Heart of Zen while a wonderful group of people toiled away in the near freezing temperatures to make a giant step forward in our building rehabilitation.  There was no garden work because of the frozen ground.
Because Hogen brought us construction heaters, tools and coffee, we were able to work all day and make progress.  The stage is almost gone...all the flooring is off and saved, the linoleum floor is disappearing before our eyes, the furnace room walls were dismantle. We took a look at the stairs and have a plan to rebuild the ones that need it.
Thank you very much to all who participated.... Nestor (electrician), Wayne (expert  floor guy),  Zac (master carpenter), Lori (denailer and consultant for water into the garden),  Doug (all around assistant), Allen and Gensho (linoleum experts), Josh and Dennis (concrete and wire wall removers!!!!), Nan, Robert and Bansho (always willing to do whatever is needed, were floaters).  If I missed anyone, please let me know.
Without the work of the sangha and friends this project would not be completed. Some of us can give money, some can give talent, other give encouragement and advice but they folks (and all those who have worked and will work) gave that precious commodity....TIME along with effort and expertise.
Hogen unveiled the enso drawn by Harada Roshi for Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple.  It will hang above the altar but for now it is at Great Vow for safe keeping until our dedication ceremony.
Thanks with many bows,
Kodo
Successful Work Practice
Successful Work Practice
February 13

Dear Sangha and Friends:

This Sunday was a very successful work practice day, filled with enthusiasm and energy.  We were able to clear out the zendo of all the old panelling and plaster.  We filled a drop box with more than a ton of material along with lots of the old rug.  Wayne H. led the deconstruction of the stage while many others pulled thousands of nails out of the old wood and wall  studs.
Others helped to clean out the furnace room, haul a load to the Rebuild it Center, hang the door on the outside shed and begin the long task of removing the old linoleum.  The garden group had a great meeting with Jim who is a professional landscape architect and has a wonderful sketch of our green space of the future.
More than 20 people participated!  Thank you to everyone; your contributions are really helping to create our Hearth and Home.
Next Sangha Work Practice is set for Saturday Feb. 26, 2011from 9 am to 3 pm.  Please sign up. It's all part of the ZCO Work Practice google doc that we have used in the past. You can just go to your google docs or click here to find it.
If you want to work more or different days, there are one- or two-person jobs that could be done at other times. Please email me kodo.conover@gmail.com
Gassho with smiles,
