Traditional Buddhist Practice and Nonviolent Communication

August 16, 23, 30, September 6

Classes at the Portland Dharma Center

Sundays from 3:30 - 5:30 pm

Led by LaShelle Charde & Daitetsu Hull

The Four Divine Abidings are practices to dissolve mental afflictions and create mental balance.

Loving-Kindness (Metta) is a prayer, aspiration, and wishing for genuine happiness for self and other.

Compassion (Karuna)is aspiration & prayer for beings to be free from suffering and a faith that liberation from suffering is possible.

Empathetic Joy (Mudita) is taking delight in joys, successes, virtues (needs met)in others.

Equanimity (Upeksha)is a realization that all beings wish to be happy and free from suffering which gives rise to expression of loving kindness, compassion, and joy equally for all beings you encounter.

In each class we will discuss one of the four and how you can cultivate it in difficult situations in your own life.

The foundation for LaShelle Charde’s work comes from her Zen practice, experience as a trainer in personal growth, community building, and Nonviolent Communication. She holds a Master’s degree in psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. For the past twelve years, she’s worked as a professional helping youth and adults. Visit LaShelle's website
Daitetsu Hull is a Zen priest in residence at Great Vow Zen Monastery where he has been in formal training since September 2000. He first learned about NVC in 2002, and studied it actively, seeing it's direct connection to Buddhism. Over the years, with LaShelle he has practiced and eventually taught a Buddhist approach to using NVC.

Cost for classes: $10 per-class, ($30 for all four)

No pre-registration necessary, drop in's welcome.
