Zen Community of Oregon founded Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple in 2011 with the purchase of the beautiful old church it inhabits in Northeast Portland. Many hours of loving volunteer labor have gone into the renovation. It is a warm and inviting place, one you are welcome to come and enjoy.
Purpose and Vision
The purpose of Heart of Wisdom is to provide a refuge of stillness and peace in a busy urban environment, to practice and share Buddhist teachings, and to cultivate the qualities of unflagging optimism, self-discipline, compassion, and wisdom.
Daily zazen and free instruction in how meditate geared to beginners is offered. Individual and group practice support is available. Also offered are quarterly day-long silent retreats, called zazenkai, and every full moon the temple is open for Loving Kindness meditation. There is never a charge for meditation so these offerings are supported by donation.
Workshops and classes are also offered, connecting spiritual practice and daily life with topics on relationships, communication, money, work, mindful eating, and the arts.
Beginners are welcome! You don't have to be a Buddhist to practice meditation. Everyone is invited to attend.
