Sangha Harmony Committee Conflict Resolution Statement and Process Guidelines for Behavior and Conflict Resolution

Zen Community of Oregon (ZCO) is a community established to provide the teachings and practice of Zen Buddhism. Those who are members of this community have a responsibility to maintain and support a healthy environment for this practice. The teachers and Board of Directors of ZCO endorse the guidelines for behavior and steps of conflict resolution contained in this document. The ZCO Board has also created the Sangha Harmony Committee (SHC) to facilitate communication between members, and to address concerns about unethical behavior in the community

If you have conflict within the Sangha that you are unable to resolve or you have ethical concerns about a ZCO community member, teacher or leader contact the Sangha Harmony Committee

ZCO Ethical Principles And Conflict Management

Sangha Harmony Committee Members

Jill Johanson

Committee Chair
I've practiced meditation for 14 years, primarily with Great Vow. I've attended numerous retreats and sesshins. I've taken the 5 precepts, and I'm working toward Jukai. I have vowed to live simply and love generously. It is important to me to live an ethical life. I'm a retired attorney, Superior Court and Appellate Court Judge. I believe in the Rule of Law and that no one is above the law. Professionally, I practiced under an Ethics Code that I took seriously. I look forward to working with ZCO members and others to hold our community to the highest ethical standards and to compassionately resolve conflict.

Committee Member, Dharma Holder
I have practiced with ZCO since 2009 and became a Dharma Holder in 2019. I currently co-lead Thursday evening meditation at Heart of Wisdom Zen Temple. Since 2019 I have served as treasurer for ZCO. I recently retired from a 30 year chiropractic career and enjoy spending more time with family and friends. As a sewing hobbyist, I happily tutor Zen students through the construction of wagessas and rakusus.

I have practice at various times at Great Vow and Heart of Wisdom. I am a mental health counselor and a substance use disorder counselor. I began practicing with ZCO in February 2016 and entered residency at Great Vow from June 2016 to November 2018. In early 2019, I joined the Heart of Wisdom community, serving as manager of Trillium House that year. I have since led morning meditations and Friday morning sangha breakfasts, co-facilitated LGBTQ Dharma, sat on various committees and councils, filled various service positions, co-facilitated workshops, and assisted with temple construction projects. When not meditating I enjoy an eclectic range of interests, from music to fishing to contemplating celestial phenomena. This reflects my vows of being a bridge across age, gender, and creed, and being a force for depolarization. I am a lucky wife, stepmom, foster mom, cat lady, and garage dweller. Please do not hesitate to contact me if anything is coming up for you in Sangha. I would be happy and honored to support you.

I began practicing with ZCO in 2017 and received the precepts in 2021.  I primarily practice at Heart of Wisdom on Tuesday nights with Zen Teacher Kodo, where I have held various service positions and currently serve as the Head of Zendo.  In the wider world I am a long time practitioner and teacher of aikido (ai - harmony; ki - spirit, mind, or universal energy; dō - way, a non-violent Japanese martial art), and I work in homeless services where I assist with the administration of federal grant programs.  I recently completed a three year volunteer service facilitating a peer support group for survivors of trauma and abuse.  I am grateful to the community for the opportunity to listen and be of service as a member of the Harmony Committee!

I have practiced with ZCO since 2018 and took Jukai in 2024. I began sitting and practicing Zen in 1987 while in college, but I didn’t find a solid footing in the dharma until coming to ZCO. Here, I feel I have discovered a unique sangha that provides a welcoming container for my spiritual growth. I attend the Sunday Morning program at Heart of Wisdom and have held several service positions. Outside of ZCO, I have maintained a private practice as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist for the past two decades. After many years downtown, I recently moved my office to Southwest Portland. I’m married and have two grown children.

I have been practicing on and off with ZCO for over 10 years.  For many years, my only contact with the community was Sesshin at Great Vow.  About 6 years ago, I joined ZCO as a member, but continued to have minimal contact with the community.  It was in 2020, when ZCO went online that I became much more active, attending teachings several nights a week.  Because of the increased accessibility of the teachers, I was able to form a relationship with Hogen Roshi. Currently, I attend Sunday night services, mostly online, but occasionally in person, sit sometimes with the Trillium house folks online in the morning and several times a year make it to the monastery for Sunday morning services or Sesshin.  Away from ZCO, I am a mother to 21 year-old and 17 year-old daughters. I trained as a psychiatrist and worked in community mental health on and off for about 10 years.  For the last 3 years, I have been working at an Opioid Treatment Program in Vancouver.  Personally, I have spent the last eight years in the 12-step fellowships of CoDA and Alanon.

Committee Member, Dharma Holder
I am one of the priests living and practicing full-time at Great Vow Zen Monastery in Clatskanie. I started formally practicing Zen in 2012 during the Summer Program at Great Vow. I entered the monastery as a full-time trainee in 2014, and received Tokudo (Zen priest ordination) in 2019. I have served as the in-house bookkeeper of Zen Community of Oregon for over six years, as well as filling many of the other roles at the monastery, such as tenzo (head cook), shuso (head of zendo). I aspire to continue to offer myself in beautiful, meaningful ways. I became a Dharma Holder in 2023.  I love the community aspect of spiritual life, in that each person’s light can come forth and create a special work of art alongside the light of companions. I deeply appreciate the foundation of respect, care, listening, and gentleness that we are shaping together.
